about the event

"Eletive Affinities: Joan Miró and Contemporary Art in the Collection of Museu de Serralves" proposes a reading of Miró’s work in dialogue with contemporary artists from different geographies and languages. The exhibition focuses mainly on the 1960s and 1970s, while not excluding occasional incursions into earlier works, to show unexpected encounters between Miró’s paintings, drawings, collages, sculptures and textile works and pieces by other creators.

Throughout the exhibition, links emerge between practices as diverse as painting, sculpture, installation, photography, video and multimedia works, as well as Process Art, Arte Povera, Neo-expressionism and approaches that question language and pictorial codes. The selection includes works by artists such as Rui Aguiar, Helena Almeida, Armando Alves, Giovanni Anselmo, Michael Biberstein, Wang Bing, Marcel Broodthaers, Pedro Calapez, Luisa Cunha, António Júlio Duarte, Josep Guinovart, Ana Hatherly, Jörg Immendorf, Asger Jorn, Anselm Kiefer, Jannis Kounellis, Barry Le Va, Julie Mehretu, Robert Morris, Blinky Palermo, A.R. Penck, Júlio Pomar, Dieter Roth, Julião Sarmento, Thomas Schütte, Ângelo de Sousa and Antoni Tàpies, among others.

After a preamble, the exhibition is organized into nine thematic sections — from "Process Art" to "Place/Non-place" — which guide the reading of these crossings between work, time and conceptual affinities. The exhibition is organized by Fundação de Serralves — Museu de Arte Contemporânea, with curatorship by Robert Lubar Messeri and coordination by Isabel Braga.
