This legendary Arab saga, transmitted orally since the 14th century, has been sung and celebrated by folk poets across generations. We follow the remarkable journey of the Bani Hilal tribe in their migration from Najd, on the Arabian Peninsula, to Tunisia. And the extraordinary life of Abu Zaid al-Hilali, a boy exiled in childhood because of the color of his skin, who rises from indigent refugee to one of the most famous legends in the Arab world. Often called the “Arab Iliad,” the Hilali epic has resonated through the centuries, but today it risks disappearing, preserved only by a handful of folk poets in Upper Egypt.
