Synopsis

*Macacos* is a performance about how racism and the erasure of Black memories and ancestralities are rooted in the history of Brazil. The play follows a Black man who seeks new spaces to occupy, confronting and reflecting on the adjective "macaco", used against Black people around the world. It recalls episodes from Brazilian history and cites statistics about the mothers and families of Black youths imprisoned or killed by the Brazilian Military Police. In addition, colonization is a central axis used to explain how we arrive at the present day. The questions raised by this Black man invite the audience to question the prejudice present in Brazil's social structure and everyday life from 1500 to the present day. — Clayton Nascimento
