about the event
The Medieval Tower hosts the temporary exhibition “Figuras de Identidade Minhota”, a display that brings together contemporary interpretations of central symbols of Barcelos and Minho popular culture. The journey focuses on the Barcelos Rooster, the Woman of Minho, and the Popular Musician, with pieces that value artisanal know-how, tradition, and the connection between heritage and local identity.
The exhibition highlights the Barcelos Rooster as a cultural icon associated with the Legend of the Rooster, underlining its weight in collective memory and in projecting the image of Barcelos. The Woman of Minho appears through traditional dress and its distinctive elements, evoking customs, history, and the social condition of other times. The Popular Musician is recalled in the figure of the player from the Barcelos Plastic Band, as a tribute to the relationship between music, festivities, and pilgrimages in the municipality.
The exhibition also marks the 50 years of the Barcelos Plastic Band and shows how artisans and creators continue to reinvent these symbols without losing their authenticity. The result is a contemporary reading of tradition, made through different materials and techniques, in dialogue with the roots of the territory.
