about the event
Integrated into the commemorations of the centenary of the birth of Júlio Pomar (1926–2018), the exhibition “Júlio Pomar’s Bocage” proposes a meeting between the visual arts and literature based on nine drawings in which the painter portrays Elmano Sadino, accompanied by a selection of poems in which Bocage portrays himself.
Created in the 1980s, these works emerged within the scope of the tile-cladding project for the Alto dos Moinhos station of the Lisbon Metro, dedicated to major figures of Portuguese literature such as Bocage, Camões, Fernando Pessoa and Almada Negreiros. The exhibition also highlights the way Júlio Pomar captures, with an economical line and great expressiveness, the restless spirit, irreverence and genius of Manuel Maria Barbosa du Bocage, born in Setúbal in 1765.
The works on display belong to the collections of the Atelier-Museu Júlio Pomar and the Museu de Setúbal / Convento de Jesus, and are accompanied by brief biographical notes on both personalities and by two emblematic poems by the poet from Setúbal.
