Miguel Gomes

Having started his career as a critic and journalist, Miguel Gomes (Lisboa, 1972) is now one of the most recognized and internationally awarded contemporary Portuguese filmmakers. Exploring the intersection between documentary and fiction — as self-referential as it is strongly influenced by the Nouvelle Vague and Italian Neorealism —, his cinema is built on questioning stereotypes and consensual representations, common sense and petty-bourgeois imagery, on exploring the destabilizing potential of popular culture and childlike rationality, and on the ironic dismantling of journalistic current affairs, the contradictions of our time, and the protocol-driven representations of the country’s recent history.

Making his debut with the short film Entretanto (1999), awarded at the festivals of Oberhausen and Vila do Conde, the director’s filmography includes six feature films — *A Cara Que Mereces* (2004), *Aquele Querido Mês de Agosto* (2008), *Tabu* (2012), *As Mil e Uma Noites* (2015), *Diários de Otsoga* (2021) and *Grand Tour* (2024) — and several short films, presented and awarded at major international festivals such as Viennale, São Paulo, Las Palmas, Guadalajara (2008), Berlin and Las Palmas (2012), Buenos Aires (2014), Seville and Sydney (2015) or Mar del Plata (2022).

These distinctions culminate in the recent Palme d’Or for Best Director, won at the Cannes Film Festival in 2024, which consecrates Miguel Gomes as one of the most celebrated filmmakers of today.

The exhibition, conceived in collaboration with the author, will be curated by António Preto and Jean-Pierre Rehm. The show will be accompanied by a full retrospective and carte blanche, as well as the publication of a catalogue.
