Museum Outside the Doors | Basket, attributed to Ngungunhane

date27 Apr - 24 Aug

about the event

This presentation highlights a small lidded basket, oval in shape and made of straw and wicker, attributed to the African chiefs Gungunhana and his companions, captured by Mouzinho de Albuquerque in 1895.

After being detained in Lisbon, they were transferred to Terceira, where they remained confined in Monte Brasil. In that context, they turned to hunting and basketry, as well as to their traditions, to fill their time and minds and also to connect with the local people, to whom they sold or offered their work.

The piece belongs to the Ethnography Management Unit of the Museum of Angra do Heroísmo and is on display at Aerogare Civil das Lajes.
