Gehry's Century

about the event

*Gehry's Century* proposes a broad reading of the work of Frank Gehry, a major figure in contemporary architecture, through eight thematic chapters and 19 projects that show his singular way of bringing instinct and intellect together. The selection includes the house in Santa Monica, the Chiat/Day offices, Loyola Law School, the Vitra Design Museum, the Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, among other works in Los Angeles, Berlin, Paris, Sydney, Toronto and Portugal.

The exhibition also highlights Gehry's process-based work, visible in sketches and models of completed, unbuilt, or still ongoing projects, and underscores the way his architecture dissolves boundaries between sculpture and building, gravity and fluidity, memory and future. There is also a particular focus on the dialogue with other architects and artists, including Álvaro Siza, with whom he collaborated on the master plan for the ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena.

Organized by the Fundação de Serralves and curated by António Choupina, the institution's Director of Architecture, together with Gehry Partners and in collaboration with the Getty, the show is not presented as a closed retrospective, but as a celebration of the inventive freedom that spans nearly a hundred years of work.
