Rebels Without a Cause

In August, Cinemateca Portuguesa - Museu do Cinema is dedicating its program to *Rebeldes Sem Causas*, a cycle of 25 American films centered on the portrayal of the youth that grew up between the mid-1950s and the mid-1970s. The selection begins with *REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE* and ends with *SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER*, proposing a journey through the forms of nonconformity, unease, and rebellion that marked that period.

The program brings together titles by directors such as Francis Ford Coppola, Nicholas Ray, Elia Kazan, Robert Mulligan, Ida Lupino, Mike Nichols, Otto Preminger, Milos Forman, Peter Bogdanovich, Walter Hill, Paul Morrissey, George Lucas, Dennis Hopper, Arthur Penn, and John Badham. There are screenings in the late afternoon and at night, with afternoon screenings in Sala Luís de Pina and evening sessions on the Esplanada.

The Cinemateca itself notes that August will have fewer screenings than the usual model and that, unless otherwise indicated, the afternoon screenings move to Sala Luís de Pina due to the installation of new sound equipment. The cycle brings together different forms of rebellion — more collective in films such as *WEST SIDE STORY*, *THE WARRIORS*, and *THE OUTSIDERS*, more individual in other titles — to compose a broad portrait of American youth.
