THE HOUSE THAT BLOSSOMED THERE
I remember seeing this house when it was not yet Casa do Jardim da Estrela. It was an empty house, waiting, holding memories of what it had been. Today, I find in it everything it was missing then: people, voices and life. I arrived with my hands full of wood, wool and other materials that nature lends us, and found a house that makes making a way of being together. In the workshops, I see children, parents and grandparents around the same table, discovering that creating is also a way of talking, playing and belonging. What captivates me most are the people. Each workshop is different, because each group brings its own stories, gestures and curiosities – and so I learn as much as I teach. I always take home more than I brought. I believe that making is playing, and that working with sustainable, local materials gives us back something essential: the pleasure of creating without haste, with care for the material and for those beside us. This care is also that of the people who work at Casa every day: the team that thinks about and chooses the exhibitions and activities and, by bringing sustainability to the centre, invites us to look at and reflect on the subject – giving meaning to everything that happens here. I am grateful to be part of it – a garden where, besides plants, ideas, gestures and encounters blossom.

EXHIBITIONS
26 September to 31 October Opening 4pm Os Moradores da Rua de São Bento Swati Devichi and Elena Ruiz A photographer and an artist-curator carried out a photographic exploration of the inhabitants of Rua de São Bento, more specifically people who run traditional shops in the neighbourhood and resist the emergence of new trendy shops, with prices that exceed the average Portuguese budget. Through the double-exposure technique in analogue photography, they mix their stories with the street where they are located. This exhibition shows the result and seeks to bring together the neighbours and participants in the project.
Outdoor patio | Free admission
4 to 30 September Opening 6pm Laboratório Vulnerabilis Catarina Nunes, Susana Soares Pinto and Susana de Medeiros Central gallery | Free admission (See complementary activities for the exhibition in the programme list) The project is based on the idea of a mobile laboratory that 'lands' in various places, including Capelo (Faial Island) and Berlenga Island, bringing together the visual arts, natural sciences and human sciences. Bringing the artist closer to the figure of the scientist, in a relationship with topia, the work develops through slow walking and the gentle collaboration resulting from chance encounters. Starting from the idea of sympoiesis, formulated by the philosopher Donna Haraway, the artists propose exploring poetic mimicries between aquatic and terrestrial environments and imagining new forms of coexistence between beings/materials.
5 to 25 September Opening 4pm Arvoressências Maurício Vieira An exhibition of poems and images from the Revista Arvoressências, which promotes the intertwining of poetry and nature, publishing verses from different cultures and eras.
