Festas de Valpaços 2025: tradition, faith, and lots of music

September in Valpaços has a special flavor. The Trás-os-Montes town dresses up to host the Festas in honor of Our Lady of Health, one of the region’s largest religious and cultural events. These are days of devotion, but also of conviviality, music, folklore, and moments that stay in the memory. Anyone who has already experienced these festivities knows how hard it is to resist the contagious atmosphere that fills the streets and Largo da Feira.

Between devotion and spectacle

The religious celebrations remain the heart of the festival. The Candlelight Procession and the grand procession of 6 September are moments that give you goosebumps, even for those who are not particularly devout. The respectful silence, broken only by the music of the philharmonic bands, creates an atmosphere that is hard to describe in words. And then, almost without time to catch your breath, popular music and concerts by major artists liven up the night.

A lineup for every taste

The diversity is perhaps the greatest strength of the Festas de Valpaços. Those who enjoy folklore will find in the Folklore Festival a living portrait of Portuguese traditions. Those who prefer fado will have the chance to hear Cuca Roseta moving the audience on 2 September. And for those who like big shows, the names Calema, GNR, and Mónica Sintra promise to fill Largo da Feira with true crowds.

But it doesn’t stop there. Pete Tha Zouk and Wilson Honrado ensure there will also be room to dance until dawn, in a fusion between the traditional and the modern that has already become a hallmark of the festivities. And of course, the inevitable local groups such as “Ritmo Jovem Banda” and “Musical Norte” keep alive that village-festa spirit, where everyone dances without looking at the clock.

More than concerts

It is easy to think of the festivities only as a music lineup, but the truth is that Valpaços offers much more. There are shooting competitions, motorcycling, motocross, and even moments of community gathering, such as the traditional fairground feast. The arrival of the philharmonic bands and the fireworks display are the kind of details that add a special touch and make all the difference compared with other events.

Anyone looking for a getaway in early September will find in Valpaços the perfect mix of tradition, faith, and fun. It is one of those events that make you feel proud to be Portuguese, where music, culture, and devotion go hand in hand. And, let’s be honest, there are few things better than spending a warm September night to the sound of good music, surrounded by cheerful people and with the promise of fireworks lighting up the sky.
