James Webb: There’s No Place Called Home (Belém, Lisbon)

In *There’s No Place Called Home (Belém, Lisboa)*, James Webb presents a sound and visual installation that links two points in Lisbon through the song of a forest kingfisher: the gardens of MAC/CCB, in Belém, and the Rádio-Galeria Antecâmara, in the former Bairro das Colónias.

The work is part of the *There’s No Place Called Home* series and draws on a recurring procedure in Webb’s practice: choosing a tree and making the song of a foreign bird that could never be found there sound from it. In this Lisbon version, the project brings together landscape, displacement, and colonial legacies, setting in contrast one space marked by monuments and references to the Portuguese empire and another neighborhood shaped by histories of migration, marginalization, and gentrification.

The installation is accompanied by *Learning from Birds*, a collection of photographs, quotations, poems, songs, drawings, and other references gathered by the artist from human coexistence with birds. The ensemble broadens the reading of the work and underscores the relationships between species, historical times, and different places. The text and curation are by Luísa Santos, in a project developed in collaboration with Galeria Antecâmara.
