The Rooster Crows

Cantar de Galo, by Companhia Mala Voadora, offers a critical and provocative reading of the Barcelos Rooster, giving it a voice to revisit its origins and the way its history was appropriated. The play intersects this figure with Salazar, exposing the construction of a nationalist fiction and symbolic manipulation during the fascist regime.

Written by Robert Schenkkan for Jorge Andrade, the show brings together direction and performance by Jorge Andrade himself, with translation by Joana Frazão. The staging also includes an extensive artistic team and is the result of a co-production by FITEI – Festival Internacional de Teatro de Expressão Ibérica, Teatro Viriato and Theatro Circo, with support from Teatro Nacional São João.
