about the event
In *Magellan*, Lav Diaz follows the Portuguese navigator in the 16th century, from his rebellion against the king to the expedition financed by the Spanish Crown toward the East. The crossing becomes an extreme test for the crew, marked by hunger and mutinies, and changes when Magellan reaches the Malay Archipelago. The film, a co-production of Portugal, Spain, France, Taiwan, and the Philippines, mixes Portuguese, English, Spanish, Visayan, French, and Latin, with Portuguese subtitles. It was presented in Cannes in 2025 and won the Golden Spike at SEMINCI.
