Drawing on her fascinations and frustrations, Luisa Fernanda Alfonso embodies and subverts the archetypes of the “character dancer” and the “mariachi” — marked by being hyper-dramatic, hyper-virtuosic, and hyper-gendered. Masterpiece explores the excesses of both amid a swirl of nostalgic and Latin American associations, diverting dance from its legitimacy, legacy, and traditions. In collaboration with composer Peter Rubel and a profusion of loudspeakers — repurposed as sonic sculptures, conveyors of emotions, and acoustic partners —, Masterpiece addresses the poetics of building, dismantling, repeating, interrupting, and abandoning dances and songs that try to exist between consonance and dissonance. — Luisa Fernanda Alfonso
